¿Por qué nos obsesionamos con las relaciones raciales y sexuales en Occidente?
In 1855, William Walker arrived in Nicaragua to save it. He was 31 years old and considered himself a genius. He declared himself president and reinstated slavery. Thirty years later, in Berlin—and thanks to quinine—a dozen countries were carving up “the white man’s grave,” Africa, to bring progress and civilization to the savages. Today, the Walkers and the Leopolds are other young people who have gotten rich by selling a future that is nothing more than a pale imitation of 16th-century Europe.
The notorious misogynist Nick Fuentes announced that he is leaving with Dryden Brown for Uruguay to “improve the race” —Brown is the CEO of Praxis, a startup funded by Peter Thiel’s ecosystem. The idea is as old as Count Gobineau, who proposed the theory of a superior race (Aryan, pale-skinned, aristocratic) in reaction to the 1848 Paris Revolution against the bankers; as old as the eugenics manuals that circulated in U.S. universities in the 1920s; just like the forced sterilization laws that later inspired Hitler and the Nazis who followed him.
But not as old as the Crusades. As we wrote earlier, the idea of biological race as a human category was unknown before capitalism. We could date it to around the 16th century. Before that, Europeans did not identify as white. Nor did “Europe” exist. For millennia, they killed one another. The Romans had slaves (later Slavs) for any reason except their race, and they had African emperors. The Greeks attributed a darker skin color to men and a lighter one to women, so being white was not a sign of masculinity but rather a mortuary trait. The Ethiopians (“sunburnt faces,” according to the Greeks) were not considered inferior because of their skin color but because they lacked their own culture. Neither the Bible nor the Quran nor European chronicles are replete with descriptions of skin color, simply because it was not a relevant detail. Except in tomb paintings, where one can see that the Romans were as diverse and dark-skinned as North Africans. Two thousand years later, the colorful Greek statues were rediscovered in Europe as completely white and became the standard of beauty. Not to mention the most recent discoveries confirming that, in the time of the ancient Egyptians, the earliest inhabitants of what are now England and Belgium were Black.
The maturation of this capitalist obsession with racial classification and slavery (based on race—a concept that perpetuated, through inheritance, the exploitation of human beings defined by law as “private property”) occurred in the 19th century, the “century of science,” but through pseudoscience and genuine self-victimization, summed up in Kipling’s poem “The White Man’s Burden”: we are superior, but we are going to be wiped out by the inferior races. A statement that contradicts the very basics of Darwinism. Because the superior races boast of intelligence, yet suffer from acute intellectual backwardness.
Now the promised land lies an hour from Buenos Aires—not in the libertarian realm but in the domain of the neoliberal left. Praxis announced that it has chosen Uruguay for its first urban development project, +Colonia, and has allocated one billion dollars to welcome the first residents in 2027. Brown plans to move there in December. In Uruguay, he’ll be just an hour away from Peter Thiel’s new residence in Buenos Aires. He had previously considered the Mediterranean (Gaza?) and Greenland. Faced with a refusal from Danish authorities, the more discreet option ultimately won out. When the North says no to trash, the South welcomes it with enthusiasm.
+Colonia is run by Eduardo Bastitta, a businessman whom Milei appointed as an advisor. The origins of the “digital nation” leave little to the imagination: Brown recounted that, during the pandemic, he began reading material from the most radical right-wing corners of the internet (4Chan?) and then inviting those people to his parties in New York. This community promotes a hyper-masculine, Western-oriented society. Fuentes will be happy among men since, as he admitted, he isn’t gay but is disgusted by the smell of women.
A very “Superman”-like masculinity. Let’s remember that democracy and the acceptance of ethnic and sexual diversity, rational arguments, and the rejection of private property and the imposition of a faith were rhetorical hijackings of the Enlightenment by Native American peoples before they were destroyed. In the past, Europe was a misogynistic, fanatical, proselytizing, and discriminatory continent.
In Uruguay, you won’t find specimens of any mythical superior race. They’ll clone themselves, like the narcissists they are. Until they realize that nature invented sex to maintain genetic diversity and, in that way, allow for change, adaptation, and evolution in the face of environmental shifts.
It’s worth remembering that the region already has experience with these “purity” laboratories. In 1887, Elisabeth Forster-Nietzsche founded Nueva Germania in the Paraguayan jungle to preserve the Aryan bloodline. Don’t forget that Aria comes from Iran: the Greeks considered Iranians inferior because they were whiter and more feminine; they were whiter because they were sick prisoners.
The “superior race” did not survive the mosquitoes of Paraguay. Decades later, in Chile, Paul Schäfer’s Colonia Dignidad combined order, discipline, and Christian morality with pedophilia, torture, and collaboration with the Pinochet dictatorship—a regime that championed “Western Christian civilization.”
Like any country, Uruguay is not free of racism; but its levels have been, by far, lower than in the mythologically named West. Of the three forms of racism, it lacked the ideological one. Now it runs the risk of becoming what Argentine President Sarmiento praised upon his return from the United States: a country developed through the power of racism. The VIP immigrants—the chosen few who do not need tourist visas—will soon discover that there were others there—women, for example. Others who think differently. Then they will proceed as always: sowing conflict between sycophants and the indomitable, fostering segregation among the unchosen, while they attend to what really matters.
For them, what matters has never been race, religion, or homeland. What matters is hegemony and resources. Uruguay sits atop and alongside one of the world’s largest freshwater reserves. Water will be the oil of this century—with the difference that one can live without oil. In Bolivia, in 2000, a multinational corporation privatized water to the point of charging peasants for rain. It took a popular uprising to drive them out. In the United States, entire communities have had to organize to resist pollution and the privatization of water by data centers without public consultation.
Meanwhile, the Uruguayan government celebrates “excellent investments” and “innovation hubs” that are nothing of the sort. The language hasn’t changed since the 19th century. Back then, it was called progress. The northwestern empires dumped their surplus slave-trading and industrial capital into railroads and ports in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, while their oligarchies celebrated and the indigenous peoples bent their backs and died by the thousands. The railroads did not connect towns; they connected the mines and ranches to the ports. A perfect golden cage that made development and independence impossible for the South.
The results were plain to see—even to the blind.
