La Política del Bully no va a funcionar. Tal vez usted no lo vea, pero sus hijos sí.

A finales del siglo XIX y principios del siglo XX, esa misma doctrina se conoció como Política del Garrote, por aquello de Teo Roosevelt: “Habla sueve mientras cargas un garrote”. Por entonces, Estados Unidos era un imperio ascendente y con posibilidades ilimitadas.

El problema hoy es que Washington ya no es el dueño del único garrote en el barrio. Peor aun cuando, quienes han sufrido su matoneo por generaciones, son unos cuantos, cada uno con su garrote.

Mi consejo es simple, por el bien de ese pueblo que usted dice amar más que su dinero y por el bien del resto del mundo, aunque esta última no es una mención que lo vaya a conmover demasiado:

Cuando tu poder está en la decadencia senil, no entres a la Trampa de Tucídides. Habla sueve y abre la puerta de las negociaciones.

Algo vas a perder, pero no todo.

A piece of advice, Mr. Trump

The Bully Policy isn’t going to work. You may not see it, but your children will.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, that same doctrine was known as the Big Stick Policy, after Theo Roosevelt’s saying: “Speak softly while carrying a big stick.” Back then, the United States was a rising empire with unlimited possibilities.

The problem today is that Washington no longer owns the only big stick in the neighborhood. Even worse is that those who have suffered its bullying for generations are a few, each with a big stick.

My advice is simple, for the sake of those people you claim to love more than your money and for the sake of the rest of the world, although this last one isn’t a statement that will move you too much:

When your power is in senile decay, don’t enter the Thucydides Trap. Speak softly and open the door to negotiations.

You will lose something, but not everything.
