–Buen día, Dr. Majfud. Soy Xxx del canal de noticias BBNN. Me pasó su número Hhh de XYZ.  Queríamos saber si está disponible para una entrevista mañana a las 9:00 de la mañana.

–¿Grabada? ¿Puede ser a las 7:00 horas de aquí?

–Sí, vale. Hablaremos sobre la invasión a Ucrania, la expulsión de Rusia del Consejo de Derechos Humanos de la ONU y sobre los pedidos para juzgar a Putin por crímenes de Guerra.

–OK. ¿Vamos a hablar también de Mosul y de otros crímenes de guerra a manos de la OTAN?

–La idea es hablar sobre lo que es actualidad. ¿Está usted de acuerdo con la invasión de Ucrania?

–Lo he dicho mil veces: no. No estoy de acuerdo. Un Isaac Newton ha dicho que escribo lo que escribo porque soy pro-Putin y que no entiendo la realidad. El experto es británico, aunque ha hecho turismo algunas veces en Polonia.

–¿Usted está con Putin?

–¿Otra vez? ¿De dónde sacan eso? ¿Tengo cara de Putin? Tampoco estoy de acuerdo con la OTAN. Mire, no me creo dueño de la verdad, pero estoy en contra de la doble vara moral de las superpotencias y en contra de la manipulación mediática. ¿Eso es malo? ¿No es el momento de criticar la doble moral de las superpotencias? ¿Cuándo, si no? ¿Debo decir lo que otros quieren para no ofender a nadie? ¿Por qué les preocupa tanto la opinión de alguien como yo, con una influencia cero en estos conflictos?

–No es el momento ahora de hablar de invasiones pasadas… En periodismo tenemos poco tiempo y debemos centrarnos en la noticia.

–Ese es el problema. ¿Alguien cree que el periodismo, incluso el mejor y el más honesto, es un espejo neutral de la realidad? Además, no son ni invasiones ni tragedias pasadas. Estamos hablando de crímenes de guerra de las últimas décadas en varios países “sin importancia” pero a mayor escala. Miren lo que está ocurriendo ahora mismo en Yemen o en Palestina… Hace un par de meses más de 200 personas fueron masacradas en Saada y Hodeidah, Yemen, con aviones saudíes y bombas estadounidenses. Nada en comparación a los 300.000 que ya murieron antes. La mayoría niños y jóvenes, aunque no rubios ni de ojos celestes. ¿Recuerdan lo de Saada y Hodeidah? ¿Hicieron un programa para escandalizarse de esa masacre? Pues, resulta que nunca es momento de hablar de los crímenes de los buenos. ¿Cuándo, entonces? Si quiere mi modesta opinión, prefiero hablar de toda la película, no sólo de una escena. ¿Hay alguna escena en alguna película que tenga sentido sin las anteriores?

–Sr. Majfud, este no es el medio para discutir esas cosas tan complejas.

–No, claro. Sólo les estaba dando letra para planificar la entrevista. Eso es lo que me piden siempre. ¿Podemos discutirlo durante la entrevista, aunque sea brevemente?

No hubo respuesta ni entrevista. Como decían los productores de una cadena latinoamericana que solía llamarme hasta hace diez años cuando no les caía bien lo que estaba diciendo, “Disculpe, profesor, estamos teniendo problemas técnicos”. La última vez, creo que fue en 2014 o 2015. En medio de un debate, me quedé sin poder terminar mi réplica a los analistas que se encontraban en sus estudios. (La cadena era NTN24; en este caso puedo decirlo porque el diálogo no trascurrió en un medio privado.)

–Disculpe, señor Majfud, estamos teniendo problemas técnicos –me dijo la productora.

–Qué casualidad –le dije– justo cuando pensé que íbamos a tener problemas técnicos.

Esa fue la última vez que me llamaron. Y así tantos otros que se llaman medios: medio verdad, medio objetivos, medio independientes.

Look, I don’t think I own the truth, but I am against the double standard of the superpowers and against media manipulation. That’s bad? Isn’t it time to criticize the double standards of the superpowers? When, if not? Should I say what others want so as not to offend anyone? Why do they care so much about the opinion of someone like me, with zero influence in these conflicts?

–Now is not the time to talk about past invasions… In journalism we have little time and we must focus on the news.

-That’s the problem. Does anyone believe that journalism, even the best and most honest, is a neutral mirror of reality? Furthermore, they are neither invasions nor past tragedies. We are talking about war crimes of the last decades in several “unimportant” countries but on a larger scale. Look at what is happening right now in Yemen or in Palestine… A couple of months ago more than 200 people were massacred in Saada and Hodeidah, Yemen, with Saudi planes and US bombs. Nothing compared to the 300,000 who have already died before. Most of them are children and young people, although not blond or blue-eyed. Remember Saada and Hodeidah? Did they make a program to be scandalized by that massacre? Well, it turns out that this is never the time to talk about the crimes of the good guys. When then? If you want my humble opinion, I prefer to talk about the whole movie, not just one scene. Is there a scene in any movie that makes sense without the above?

-Mr. Majfud, this is not the place to discuss such complex things.

-Unclear. I was just giving them lyrics to plan the interview. That’s what they always ask me. Can we discuss it during the interview, even briefly?

There was no response or interview. As the producers of a Latin American network used to call me until ten years ago when they didn’t like what I was saying, “Excuse me, professor, we’re having technical problems”. The last time, I think it was in 2014 or 2015. In the middle of a debate, I was unable to finish my reply to the analysts who were in their studies. (The string was NTN24; in this case I can tell because the dialogue did not take place in a private environment.)
